The obligation
All NZ winemakers must register and operate a Wine Standards Management Plan under the Wine Act 2003. Plans may be based on the NZ Winegrowers industry code of practice or an approved template.
The Wine Act 2003 requires every winemaker in New Zealand to register a Wine Standards Management Plan (WSMP) with MPI. The plan must demonstrate how the winemaker will meet wine standards. It may be based on the NZ Winegrowers industry code of practice, a template, or a model approved by the Director-General as valid and appropriate. Failure to operate under a registered WSMP is a compliance breach enforceable by MPI.
