The obligation

PCBUs must provide audiometric testing for workers who frequently use hearing protectors as a noise control measure (WHS General Regulations 2022, reg 58).

Under reg 58 of the WHS General Regulations 2022, a PCBU must provide audiometric testing to any worker who is required to frequently use personal hearing protectors as a control measure for noise that exceeds the exposure standard. The Code specifies timing (initial baseline, then at least every two years), recordkeeping obligations, and what to do when a test indicates hearing deterioration — including reviewing controls and notifying the worker. Costs must be borne by the PCBU.
