Certain food businesses in Victoria must appoint a qualified Food Safety Supervisor who is responsible for ensuring safe food handling practices.
Section 19G of the Food Act 1984 (Vic) requires specified food businesses to appoint a Food Safety Supervisor (FSS). The FSS must hold a nationally recognised qualification in food safety and must be reasonably accessible to food handlers. The FSS obligation applies to businesses in the hospitality, retail food, and catering sectors. Failure to appoint an FSS is an offence. Businesses must keep records of FSS details and ensure the FSS is contactable during food handling operations.
