The obligation
PCBUs must identify and manage underground services (gas, electrical, water, telecoms) before and during excavation to prevent strikes and harm.
The Code of Practice requires PCBUs to obtain plans from relevant authorities, use cable/pipe locating equipment, and apply safe digging practices near known or suspected underground services. Positive location (hand digging or vacuum excavation) is required within defined proximity to services. Workers must be trained to identify markers and respond to unexpected service strikes.
