The obligation
SafeWork NSW issued a new Sawmilling Industry Code of Practice gazetted 22 May 2026, replacing the prior pre-WHS-era code. From 1 July 2026 a statutory duty to comply (or meet an equivalent standard) applies.
SafeWork NSW approved and gazetted the Sawmilling Industry Code of Practice on 22 May 2026 under WHS Act s274. The Code covers all workplaces where sawmilling is carried out (small bush sawmills to large industrial facilities). It references the WHS Act 2011 (NSW) and the newly commenced WHS Regulation 2025 (NSW). Legislative changes effective 1 July 2026 impose a duty to comply with a code of practice or demonstrate an equivalent or higher standard of health and safety.
