The obligation
PCBUs must select blasting media and implement engineering controls to minimise generation and discharge of toxic dusts during abrasive blasting.
The NSW Abrasive Blasting COP requires PCBUs to assess and control dust hazards arising from blasting media. Crystalline silica-containing media (e.g. beach sand) are prohibited or severely restricted. PCBUs must apply the hierarchy of controls, prioritise substitution with less hazardous media, use enclosed/ventilated blasting areas, and maintain RPE. Appendix A of the COP provides guidance on media selection.
