The obligation
PCBUs must control exposure to optical radiation (UV/IR) and noise from welding, and provide appropriate PPE including welding helmets, eye protection, hearing protection, and protective clothing.
Welding generates intense UV and IR radiation capable of causing arc eye and skin burns, and noise levels that may exceed exposure standards. The Code requires PCBUs to: use appropriate welding screens/curtains; select helmets and lenses meeting relevant Australian Standards; provide and enforce use of hearing protection where noise controls are insufficient; and supply flame-resistant protective clothing and gloves. Workers must be instructed in correct PPE use and maintenance.
