Rail transport operators must notify ONRSR of notifiable occurrences (accidents, incidents, near-misses) within prescribed timeframes and preserve evidence at the scene.
The RSNL requires rail transport operators to immediately notify ONRSR upon becoming aware of a notifiable occurrence (defined to include accidents causing death or serious injury, dangerous incidents, and significant near-misses). Operators must preserve the incident site and evidence, provide an initial and subsequent written report, and cooperate with investigations. Failure to notify is an offence. ONRSR investigators have broad powers of entry, inspection, and seizure.
