A fall arrest system — including safety harness, lanyard, self-retracting lifeline, and anchorage — is the third-tier and last-resort control. It does not prevent a fall but limits fall distance and arrest forces. The code requires: anchorages designed to withstand arrest forces (ref. AS/NZS 1891.4); harnesses complying with AS/NZS 1891.1; pre-use inspection; a documented emergency rescue plan so a fallen worker can be retrieved without delay; and workers trained and competent before use.
