The obligation
Importers must comply with the Imported Food Inspection Scheme: obtain food control certificates, hold food pending clearance, and not deal with food without authorised officer approval.
Under Part 2 of the Imported Food Control Act 1992, all imported food is subject to the Imported Food Inspection Scheme. Importers must hold examinable food while it awaits inspection and must not deal with it unless a food control certificate has been issued or an authorised officer approves. Civil penalties apply for dealing with food without a certificate or compliance agreement. Inspectors may direct treatment, destruction, or re-exportation of food that fails standards.
