The obligation
PCBUs must apply the hierarchy of controls to manage dust generated during abrasive blasting, prioritising substitution of silica-containing media, engineering controls (enclosures, LEV), exclusion zones, and fit-tested RPE as a last resort.
Abrasive blasting generates large quantities of respirable and inhalable dust from both the blasting medium and the blasted surface. Toxic dusts include crystalline silica and lead.
